Passports are divided into two categories as follows :
Passports with endorsement “Emigration Check Required “ (ECR)
Passports with endorsement “ Emigration Check Not Required” (ECNR)
If Passport application is submitted with S.S.L.C/CBSE passed Certificates, one should usually get the passport with ECNR endorsement If date of birth is different between SSLC and birth certificate, then Plus 2 Certificate will also be required.
If the passport is issued with ECR endorsement, an emigration clearance from Protector of Emigrants is required to travel out of India except travel to certain countries. Those who stayed out of the country 3 years or above can easily obtain ECNR endorsement in the passport through Passport Office.
Anyone who have completed 50 years or above can also easily obtain ECNR endorsement in his/her passport from the Passport Office.
However, Passport holders who have the stamp of ECNR in the passport need not require emigration clearance from POE for going to any countries.
